Southwark Council organized a competition in order to choose the designer of a new Millenium Footbridge. It would be such a bridge which would span the famous river of London, The Thames, between the Southwark Bridge & the Blackfairs Bridge. The Competition was held in the year 1996 & it would be the first bridge across the Thames.
The Winning entry was tagged ‘The blade of light’ & it was designed by Arup, Foster & Partners & Sir Anthony Caro. The bridge was about 1,066 feet & it was made in such a way, that it would preserve the beauty of the magnificent landmarks of the city of London which could be seen from either side of the city. According to the design the bridge was 4 meter wide & the structure was such which could hold 5,000 pedestrians at any given time. The construction of the entire bridge cost 30 million Euros which began in 1996 continued till 2000 June. In the southern part of the bridge we can find The Globe Theatre & the Tate Modern Museum. The Northern part of the bridge is located near St. Paul’s Cathedral. A wonderful view of the Cathedral’s Dome is gained from the bridge. The Bridge makes a clear vision on The Tower Bridge which is London’s most renowned bridge.
